About Us

The mission of Surface Earth is to cultivate opinions from avant garde journalists and everyday non-professionals across the surface of the earth. Voices not typically found in the mainstream western media are especially encouraged to contribute their views on Surface Earth, and by doing so, expand what it means for us all to be better informed citizens of the Earth. Ideally, this will develop into an on-going collaboration and an opportunity for those contributing original thought and opinion to build and enhance their unique brand name – their own voice.

New media has empowered citizens around the world to report on their personal circumstances, express opinions on world events, and exchange information in environments most often hostile to such exercises of individuals’ right to freedom of expression. In launching Surface Earth, we have created a place where contributors can feel safe sharing their voice, views and discussing same. We recognize however that across the surface of the earth the realities of life – political, social, economic – are different from place to place, and from situation to situation.

Surface Earth contributors are allowed to post their work overtly or covertly. Under your name or a pseudonym – the choice is yours. If you feel strongly enough about the topic/opinion, but are concerned about reprisals, you can share your voice using the time honored tradition of writing under a pen name of your choice. It is up to you. If you post under a pen name, rest assured your identity will not be disclosed – better still, you don’t even have to tell us!

As the United States Supreme Court recently noted [McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission], “anonymous pamphleteering is not a pernicious, fraudulent practice, but an honorable tradition of advocacy and dissent.” The United States Supreme Court continued, “[t]he right to remain anonymous may be abused when it shields fraudulent conduct. But political speech by its nature will sometimes have unpalatable consequences, and, in general, our society accords greater weight to the value of free speech than to the dangers of its misuse.”

In short, your voice is protected here on Surface Earth.

We aim to adhere to the journalistic standards of the best of the mainstream media while encouraging a wide range of views, fresh thinking and nimbleness of the best of the new media. While we offer lots of opinion and independent thought, Surface Earth will not publish any content (new posts or comments) that we judge is overly mean spirited, contains profanity or pornographic images, homophobic or racial/ethnic slurs and abusive ad-hominy attacks.
